🌙 Dark Sky Night 7: Celestial Events

The sun and moon are joining the celebration and bringing Dark Sky Week to a close by gifting us a few moments of darkness during this year’s total solar eclipse. Here in Monte Nido, we’ll only see a partial eclipse, but we can still catch a glimpse of the eclipse in full effect. Tune in to NASA’s live stream and watch the eclipse Live as it moves across North America, starting at 10 am PT. There will be conversations with experts and telescope views of the eclipse from several sites along the eclipse path. Throughout the broadcast, you can send your questions in the Live chat using #askNASA for a chance to have them answered live.

WARNING: Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, can also be used to experience an eclipse.

Monte Nido during Dark Sky Week 2023

Also, just because Dark Sky Week comes to a close tonight, doesn’t mean that we should stop appreciating the night sky or continuing lighting practices that support wildlife and benefit our health. Monte Nido is a special place unlike any other precisely because we value our local ecosystem and the role that we play in protecting it.

So as we look ahead, find ways where you can stay involved. Join the local Dark Sky LA County chapter, get a proclamation signed, become an advocate, study light pollution, or become a Dark Sky member.

Keep updated on ways you can continue to protect the night sky at darksky.org.

MNVCA neighborhood meeting

And speaking of getting involved - join us this Tuesday night, April 9th at 7pm, for the next Monte Nido Valley Community Association meeting. Participate, find out what events are coming up, meet your neighbors, and become a member!
