What an impressive turnout for the September 12th Community Meeting! Thank you, Monte Nido, for showing up, wanting to be informed, sharing ideas, and taking a heart-felt interest. Now you are being called on to act…

Immediate Next Steps:
#1: WRITE A LETTER.
We urge you to WRITE A LETTER (click here for suggestions) stating your concerns and opposition to the proposed development of 15 very large spec houses in the heart of our community at the base of Saddle Peak Mountain, adjoining the Backbone Trail and Park Lands. It is the local residents who know the SMMs, understand the issues, and will suffer the impacts of this project most of all. We, Monte Nido, must speak up for what we care about if we want our 3rd District Supervisor (Lindsey Horvath) to advocate for us. Your written comments will be taken into consideration by the County Board of Supervisors as they deliberate. Numbers matter!
Click for where and how to submit written comments no later than Monday 9/18 at noon.
#2: ATTEND THE PUBLIC HEARING IN PERSON.
Carpool from Monte Nido. Invite your neighbors. Leave early to avoid traffic and grab a coffee.
A strong presence will be impactful!
When: Tuesday, September 19, 2023, 9:30 A.M.
Where: Board Hearing Room 381B | Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration
500 W. Temple Street | Los Angeles
Here is the Agenda
#3: PROVIDE PUBLIC COMMENT AT THE HEARING.
Click for more info on In-Person Participation here.
Each individual who signs up to speak will be given only 1 minute to address the Board.
You should summarize very briefly your most salient point(s) or concern(s). If you have already submitted a written letter you may want to refer the Board to it for your more detailed comments (and images if you included any.)
Conclude by stating that you AGREE with Regional Planning’s DENIAL of the project, (Their letter and report can be found here.) and you request that the Board of Supervisors UPHOLD that decision by DENYING the Appeal.
We have just a few days to make this happen and show our strength of engagement as a community. Please, help halt this urban intrusion into the wilderness of the Santa Monica Mountains and our own little rural neighborhood.
With sincere appreciation,
The Monte Nido Valley Community Association
Background Info:
Major development is planned along Piuma at the heart of Monte Nido. A public hearing before the L.A. County Board of Supervisors is set for Sept. 19th. Come strategize with us on Sept. 12th and learn what you can do to help protect the Santa Monica Mountains and preserve the rural character of our community. This is a battle we have been fighting for four decades.
We need YOU to join the effort NOW!
An example of the type of housing planned and where they would be located.
We need to address a critical issue that threatens the essence of our beloved rural village. More than just individual homeowners, we are also stewards of our surrounding environment and we’re facing a pivotal moment that once again requires our collective action.
Almost exactly a year ago we rallied to oppose this project. In a series of public hearings (10/4/22, 11/1/22, & 2/7/23) LA County Dept. of Regional Planning denied the applications for 15 Coastal Development Permits and 12 Variances as submitted. The developer has appealed that decision to the LA County Board of Supervisors. The Public Hearing will take place on Tuesday, 9/19/23, and your involvement can make a big difference!
We urge you to attend and speak up at this historical moment in our community’s history. Please, stand up to protect our village and the sensitive environmental resources of the Santa Monica Mountains from irreversible harm.
Why This Fight Matters!
🌳🦉🐇🦌 It’s About Preserving Our Environment: The construction of these mega mansions would create significant environmental degradation. Oak trees that have stood for generations could be felled, disrupting the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Our open spaces, wildlife habitats, local water sources, scenic corridors, and the Backbone Trail are all at risk.
👩🚒🔥 It’s About Maintaining Community Safety: The addition of such a large housing development could strain our local infrastructure, potentially leading to increased traffic congestion, accidents, flooding, and compromised emergency response times during wildfires. Let's ensure the safety of our families remains a top priority.
🏡🚴♀️🌌 It’s About Protecting Community Character: Our village's charm lies in its rural tranquility and close-knit character. The construction of mega-mansions would forever alter the fabric of our community, replacing open spaces with concrete and paving and our dark skies with bright lights. We must act now to safeguard the uniqueness that drew us here in the first place.
Below are some images that help illustrate the size of this development. It will redefine the rural character of Monte Nido.
As a startling point of reference, the impact of this subdivision along Piuma is immense and equals:
2.5x the size of the “Triangle”
the entirety of Edenwild
the majority of Malibu Meadows
almost all of Old Monte Nido
Below are images illustrating the impact and kind of resources needed for the Woolsey fire in the Santa Monica Mountains.
We are stronger when we stand united, and your presence at the hearing will make a real difference! Spread the word to your neighbors, and let's come together for the future of Monte Nido!
