Being a Pawsome Neighbor: Why Leashing Your Pup is Important

We all know that our furry friends are like family, and we’d do anything to keep them sage and happy. That’s why it’s important to keep our pups on leashes in the neighborhood and making sure they’re safe and secure in our yards. It’s not just about following rules, it’s about being a friendly neighbor and ensuring everyone’s safety. Here’s why leashing up makes sense:
Prevent Unpredictable Encounters: Dogs have their quirks and sometimes they surprise us. By leashing your pup, you prevent unexpected run-ins with other dogs or folks on neighborhood strolls. This helps prevent potential conflicts, keeping both your dog and your neighbors safe.
Respect Comfort Zones: Not everyone is a dog person, and that’s okay. Some folks have allergies or are a tad anxious around our four-legged pals. Leashing up shows respect for their space and helps keep peace in the neighborhood.
Avoid Traffic Accidents: Unleashed dogs can unexpectedly dart into the street, posing a risk to themselves and motorists. By maintaining control with a leash, you minimize the chances of a tragic accident and keep your community safer.
Protect Wildlife: Our pups may have a strong prey drive, and without a leash, they could go after local wildlife, disturbing nesting birds and scaring away small mammals. Keeping your dog on a leash helps protect the local eco-system.
Scoop that Poop: An unleashed dog can run into a bush or someone’s yard to answer nature’s call, leaving your neighbor with an unpleasant surprise. Leashing your pup makes it easier to know where your dog pooped so you can clean up after them.
Legal Compliance: LA County has leash laws in place for a reason - safety. By adhering to these laws we avoid potential fines and penalties. Nobody wants that headache.
So let’s all be pawsome neighbors by leashing up our dogs. It’s not just about following the rules; it’s about showing some love for the community. Your neighbors will appreciate it, and you’ll be doing your part to keep the neighborhood safe, friendly, and clean for everyone to enjoy.

Fall migration has begun. Help track monarch migration and the presence of milkweed. Read through protocols and then submit your observational reports.
Monarch numbers reach their peak by fall migration. At no other time of year is the population as large as it is now. Monarchs produce four generations during the typical breeding season and the population grows with each new generation. By mid-month, the first members of the migratory generation will emerge in the north. These butterflies are the great-great-grandchildren of the monarchs that left overwintering sanctuaries along the coast of California in the United States and the Monarch Biosphere Reserve in central Mexico last spring. This generation has a long and challenging life ahead: they will migrate to their overwintering locations this fall, survive the winter, and return to their breeding territories in spring 2024.

Learn how to prepare for wildfires and other disasters with the City of Malibu’s next free CERT training course starting August 17, in-person at City Hall
As part of its ongoing efforts toward community-wide preparedness, the City of Malibu is offering the next round of the highly popular Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. The series of seven free classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM, August 17 through September 26 in the Multipurpose Room at Malibu City Hall, 23825 Stuart Ranch Road.
Malibu faces all kinds of disasters, from wildfires to earthquakes and landslides. Completing the free CERT training is one of the best ways to be prepared to help yourself, your family and your community during wildfires and other disasters, and it helps Malibu to be more resilient following a disaster.
CERT is a highly-acclaimed, nationwide program that empowers community members to help themselves and their neighbors during disasters. Volunteers are trained in basic first aid, fire suppression, and search and rescue so that they can provide emergency assistance to their neighbors. Studies of past disasters such as earthquakes in Italy and Japan have shown that up to 90% of the people who were rescued from collapsed buildings were helped by local people before emergency services arrived because they were already on-site. (Source).
CERT volunteers are a crucial part of the City’s ability to prepare and respond to disasters. During the Woolsey Fire, Malibu CERT volunteers contributed about 300 hours of service to the emergency response by distributing food and medical supplies, conducting wellness checks, assisting with evacuations, and administering basic first aid.
In 2017, the City Council adopted the official CERT Program Guidelines, an important step in formally incorporating the program and the trained CERT volunteers into the City’s Emergency Management System. In addition to basic CERT training, the City’s CERT Team members must also complete Federal Emergency Manager Agency (FEMA) trainings, serve at least 30 volunteer hours per year, attend regular meetings and drills, and become registered as Disaster Service Workers.
For more information about the CERT program, or to sign up, visit the webpage or call Public Safety Liaison Sarah Flores at 310-456-2489, ext. 237, or email SAFlores@malibucity.org.

🌻Summer Garden Care🌻
As the days get warmer, it can become more difficult to care for your garden. It can be even more confusing to understand how to care for native plants in high heat. Below is a list of resources to help you keep your cool and enjoy the process.
As the days get warmer, it can become more difficult to care for your garden. It can be even more confusing to understand how to care for native plants in high heat. Below is a list of resources to help you keep your cool and enjoy the process.
In the video above, Chip Grubbs, Horticulturist at CalBG, shares insight into general summer care for both newly planted and more established plants, watering techniques, summer pruning, and typical maintenance. Look ahead to the next planting season and get tips on garden additions that look great throughout summer, others that are summer dormant, and how to expand your microhabitat for summer wildlife.
LA Times shares 20 California native plants that will look gorgeous during the summer.
“…there are yard-worthy native plants that bloom in the summer, or just look super no matter the season, so when you’re planning your new low-water garden, here are a few quick-growing natives to consider, as recommended by Tim Becker, horticultural director of the Theodore Payne Foundation, and Evan Meyer, the foundation’s executive director.”
“The heat and lack of summer rains require the California native plants in our garden to adapt in some way. If our drought-tolerant plants have received typical winter and early spring rains of about 18 inches, then in theory they will survive until the next winter rains. It doesn’t mean the plants look nice, however.”
Ceonothus Thyrsiflorus. Photo by John Doyen.
“Although they may go through a period of dormancy and survive without summer water, most native plants look better with judicious supplemental water. Another consideration is that extremely dry plants pose a fire danger. Some gardeners aim to shorten the period of summer dormancy by extending the watering period in the spring and fall. But it is important not to waste water by overwatering plants, particularly during drought conditions.”

The Living Wild Project gives tips on where to plant natives in your garden in order to thrive during the hot summer months.
“The logical remedy for heat stress is to reduce the heat exposure of the plant. Observe if wilting occurs during mid-day, with the plant recovering when the temperature drops at night. This may occur even if the plant has adequate moisture. Examine the soil to be sure it is damp below the surface in spite of the surface looking dry. If it is a recent planting, be sure that the rootball isn’t drying out. A shade cloth will provide cooling if symptoms seem extreme. Sometimes the solution is simply putting “the right plant in the right place,” knowing the microclimates of your property and providing sensitive plants shade from other plants or buildings and protection from drying wind exposure. Knowing a plant’s native habitat helps us in planning where to put the plant in our own landscape.”
Gardening in LA shares what happens when plants begin to stress out during a hot spell.
“Hot weather has finally arrived, and plants as well as people are suffering. Neither of us had a chance to acclimate, so we’re all feeling the brunt of the heat. While mid-80-degree temperatures may feel slightly warm but still comfortable to people, vegetables like tomatoes, and peppers, and eggplants (they’re in the same family) can’t complete the pollination process then. And, in the low-90s, beans stop producing blossoms altogether.”
Summer Winds Nursery lists the best plants to handle California’s summertime heat.
“Which natural qualities come together to help a plant thrive in full sun? Heat-resistant species usually come from parts of the world near the equator. Plants that originated in equatorial regions of Africa, Asia and Latin America can survive a wide variety of conditions that would often kill species from cooler environments. Because of their adaptive traits, they tolerate direct sun without drooping or withering. In fact, some can only reach their full potential in direct sun, bursting into bloom this time of year.”
Treehugger has a list of Do’s and Don’ts for gardening in a heat wave. From mulching to watering methods, here's what will help—or harm—your garden when the temperature soars.
Home Wildfire Hardening Assessments - Learn How to Protect Your Home
Watch a video on how your home could survive a wildfire from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). In the video, Dr. Jack Cohen, Fire Science Researcher with the USDA Forest Service, explains current research about how homes ignite during wildfires, and the actions that homeowners can take to help their home survive the impacts of flames and embers.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
From Malibucity.org:
During a wildfire, millions of flying, burning embers can rain down on your home and property like hail during a storm. If these embers land in receptive fuels or become lodged in something easily ignited on or near your house, the home may be in jeopardy of burning. Flying embers are a major cause of homes burning down during wind-driven wildfires. This area is commonly referred to as the Home Ignition Zone.

🐍What to Do If You See a Rattlesnake
It’s rattlesnake season. Here’s what to do if you come across one while hiking.
From The City of Malibu:
Rattlesnakes are native to Malibu and play an essential role in the ecosystem. They control rodent populations which lower the spread of rodent-borne diseases like Lyme disease and reduce property damage caused by mice, rats, and ground squirrels.
When visiting City parks, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and treat every location as though a rattlesnake could be present. Please remember to stay on trails, keep your dog on a leash, and check playground areas before allowing children to use the equipment. Keep in mind that rattlesnakes do not always rattle before striking, so a visual check is needed to guarantee they are not present. If you see a rattlesnake, stay as far away as possible, report the sighting, and do not harm the snake.
If City staff are onsite, notify them, and they will address the situation. If the snake is in a high-traffic area and City staff are not present, call the Agoura Hills Animal Shelter at 818-991-0071. Be prepared to report the snake's location, size, and danger to the public.
🌻Thank You Monte Nido!🌻
What a fun and charmingly old-fashioned Fourth of July we have the good fortune to celebrate here in Monte Nido! 2023’s “Flower Power” Parade and the Picnic at “Fleemans’ Meadow” may be over for this year, but the events will be in our (especially the children’s) memories forever. It is the quintessence of Monte Nido.

It is the quintessence of Monte Nido.
Of course, it takes the volunteer efforts of many, many members of the community to make it all happen, which is why it is such a wonderful show of neighborliness.
With deep appreciation, we’d like to thank the following people:
PICNIC —
Dana and Grace Benson, Jason and Gara Post for the generous community use of “Fleemans’ Meadow” allowing Monte Nido to continue our most treasured tradition.
All the immediate neighbors, thank you for letting us invade for the day.
Ryan and Stephanie Cupps (assisted by Evan and his grandparents) for valiantly stepping up to Chair, then setting up and decorating this year’s Picnic.
Doug Rosen for grading the Meadow without anyone even needing to ask.
Gary Bardovi for the strategic signage and messaging, hanging the Grand Old Flag, ordering the necessities, and much more from start to finish.
Ann Monahan, Tracy Katz, and Alison Sherman (plus assorted helpers) for selling hundreds of raffle tickets and greeting everyone with a welcoming smile.
Rodger Reiss and Tod Stobie for a masterful job of MCing the afternoon, organizing the games (Tod even brings the eggs and water balloons), and keeping the event flowing with such good humor.
Lauren Buckman, who with the support of daughters, Brooklyn and Charlie, opened the event singing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem
Austin Miles Grant (vocals) and Dana Benson (acoustic guitar) for providing the perfect live performance soundtrack to a memorable day.
Milo Sherman and crew, we’re hoping to hear you play at a future date.
Zadi Diaz for keeping everyone well-informed via our website which she makes inviting and attractive, for helping with this year’s merchandise, and for photographing the community in action.
Kyle Mlodzik for cheerfully being a one-man clean up committee, also for providing popsicles and enthusiasm.
Sally Livingston who once again satisfied the picnic-goer’s “sweet tooth” with a yummy selection of homemade baked goods. She did yeoman’s duty with watermelons, popsicles, and tee-shirts being added at the last minute.
Sally in turn thanks “all those community bakers who delivered delicious baked goods! Some of you are anonymous (or I failed to get the names, sorry!) but here are those I know for sure: Lena Hansen, Harriet Hellberg, Lois Love, Ann Monahan, Shari Pevsner, Alison Sherman, Joan Slimocosky, Darci Spiker. Thanks to those who offered to help with sales and organization at the Bake Sale Stand: Lena Hansen, Harriet Hellberg, Bryce Livingston, Josh Livingston, Joan Slimocosky, Alison Sherman. Last but not least, thanks to Josh Livingston for slicing numerous watermelons. A pleasure to work with one and all!”
Jane and John Cudworth who curated an amazing assortment of community donations of art, pottery, signed books, jams, wine, flowers, jewelry, vacation homes, dining experiences, and much, much more making them items of high interest and high bid. Jane’s helpers were Justin Cudworth and Lara Manouchehri, on stage she was assisted by Shawn Carvalho.
To every individual who contributed items to the Raffle and Auction and those who bought tickets or placed bids, our sincere thanks. Your generosity significantly helps endow this community event.
PARADE —
Lois Love for being willing as ever and so reliable in lining up the Parade Participants and Judges.
Thank you, Parade Judges: Cathy Ikkanda, Makela Pichler & sister Kelli Martin, Eileen Fiori, Shannon Sellers, Laurie Brandt, and Igor Rados!

The USA and CA Flags and MNVCA Banner Bearers for representing.
Ann Monahan for the “Winner” medals and David Coronella for help with the “Grand Marshal” sashes.
Wayne Pepper for decorating the Edenwild Bridge in true holiday spirit.

Whether you raised your children here and now they are raising their children in our mountain village, or your parents moved to Monte Nido and you have carried on the tradition with your children, or perhaps a grandparent has moved here to be closer to your children and you — your story matters to us!
Participating in the Parade

This year’s parade theme was inspired by the 2023 super bloom: FLOWER POWER. If you’ve never seen what Monte Nido’s homemade parade can look like or you’ve forgotten how creative the entries can get, there’s a great video of past parades and float ideas on the website. Let’s up our game and make it bloom!🌻
We’re going back to the basics this year…. It’s actually going to be a PICNIC.🍉 Bring a blanket, pack your own basket or potluck with neighbors and friends. It’s a great excuse to make deviled eggs and to eat potato salad. We’ll provide water and watermelon for free. And, of course, there’ll be the traditional GAMES: water balloon toss, 3-legged race, Monte Nido’s famously contested egg toss, lawn games, and more.
It's all such good old-fashioned fun! There is no charge to attend and participate (never has been, never will be,) but it is not free…. The cost for hiring the CHP to assist with traffic control has tripled in recent years. We pay for insurance, porta-potties, and prizes. And, as we all know, even the price of eggs for tossing has skyrocketed. Raffle and bake sale proceeds offset some of the expense, MNVCA annual dues allow us to cover the rest. If you haven’t already done so this year, please, consider joining. Only $75 (payment info is on montenido.org.) It’s the easiest way to contribute to your community. 😊
A sincere THANK YOU from the Monte Nido Valley Community Association.
Can’t wait to see you on the Fourth of July! 🇺🇸

This year's theme is FLOWER POWER!
The Super Bloom has all of us inspired to pay tribute to the beautiful blooms around us, so let's extend the wonderful colors into the deep summer months.
You can build a float on a wagon, a bike, a golf cart, a car, or just get a few friends and neighbors and celebrate the theme with costumes and your own creative take on the theme! The only limit is your imagination!
Here's a video a Monte Nido resident created to help get us inspired featuring Monte Nido parades of the past. In the coming days and weeks, we'll be posting more information on the parade and more idea inspiration. In the meantime, start planning what your float will look like!
PS: If you have past Monte Nido Parade & Picnic photos or videos and would like to share them with the community, please send them and we'll post them on the website! Email us and we'll send you a link where you can drop them in a folder.
