Community Meeting with Supervisor Horvath re: Filming in Monte Nido
Monte Nido Community,
As many of you are aware, location filming activities in Monte Nido have created significant concerns within our community. These activities can have substantial impacts on:
Fire safety
Traffic and road access
Wildlife and the natural environment
Adjacent property owners’ rights and quality of life
FilmLA is the organization responsible for issuing filming permits in Los Angeles County. Its primary mission is to support and promote the film industry in Los Angeles, as reflected in its public materials and the composition of its board of directors, whose members have deep ties to the entertainment industry. Unfortunately, the organization’s obligations to meaningfully address community impacts resulting from permitted filming activities appear to be quite limited.
For example, required notifications to nearby property owners often arrive — if at all — only shortly before filming begins, long after production arrangements have already been finalized. Attempts to engage with FilmLA regarding community concerns are frequently met with delay and limited responsiveness.
In January, I reached out to the office of Supervisor Lindsay Horvath in an effort to establish a more meaningful dialogue between FilmLA and the Monte Nido community. That effort is now beginning to show progress, and a meeting has been scheduled at Supervisor Horvath’s field office to present our concerns directly.
