In Memoriam: Joan Kay

Joan Kay died peacefully March 23, 2024 at the home of her son, Ian.  As neighbors and friends for nearly forty years, we shared many good times and some challenging personal ones too: hiking, coffee on cold MN winter mornings, art house movies, Academy Awards and Kentucky Derby viewing, picketing for causes important to us. Most of all, we shared a deep love of the Santa Monica Mountains and a commitment to preserve these mountains as open space for all.

We joined forces in the mid 1980’s at MNVCA Board meetings and were soon immersed in a LA County Board of Supervisors race involving another icon of the mountains, Don Wallace, running against Michael Antonovich in 1988. Does anyone still remember the giant purple blow-up kangaroo suit Joni donned at every Antonovich event just to harass his campaign?  Or her part in the 1970’s MN vs LVMWD lawsuit? King Gillette and Ahmanson Ranch acquisition battles? Joni was there; enthusiastic, optimistic, persistent, stubbornly committed to keeping the SMMs the special place they are.

Joan and family moved to Monte Nido in 1960. I loved hearing the history of our “hood” from the 1960’s and 1970’s.  She had many interesting stories to tell of that iconic era! Joni’s love of all things equestrian and artistic (especially Native American), plus her unique sense of humor made her a wonderful friend.  The often over used words “independent woman”, especially 60 years ago, along with perseverant, adventurous (she traveled to Europe alone in the 1970’s), courageous, ingenious in solving all the problems life throws at you define the Joni I knew and so miss.

Saturday morning, March 23, it rained from about 6AM to 8:45. Almost immediately, the sun came out and a beautiful rainbow arched in the western sky, right over Joni’s house.  It was so spectacular I called and urged two friends to look outside.  About an hour and a half later, Ian called me to say his mom died peacefully at 9AM.  Rest in peace, my friend.

Firewood Best Management Practices

Please Buy / Burn Only Local (Santa Monica Mountains) Firewood!

Wood sourced from anywhere else can spread invasive species. Currently, the Santa Monica Mountains do not have a problem with the borer beetle. The best way to keep our oaks safe is to NOT transport firewood.

The sun and moon are joining the celebration and bringing Dark Sky Week to a close by gifting us a few moments of darkness during this year’s total solar eclipse. Here in Monte Nido, we’ll only see a partial eclipse, but we can still catch a glimpse of the eclipse in full effect. Tune in to NASA’s live stream and watch the eclipse Live as it moves across North America, starting at 10 am PT. There will be conversations with experts and telescope views of the eclipse from several sites along the eclipse path. Throughout the broadcast, you can send your questions in the Live chat using #askNASA for a chance to have them answered live.

WARNING: Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing. Indirect viewing methods, such as pinhole projectors, can also be used to experience an eclipse.

🌙 Dark Sky Night 5 & 6: A Weekend of Wonder

This weekend, make an effort to spend time away from all forms of artificial light and give your body a rest. Shut your computer, turn off notifications, and listen to the sound of frogs and the crickets at night. Look up at the sky, let your eyes adjust to the darkness, and see how many constellations you can spot.

Dark Sky week is a reminder of how the night sky affects our mind, body, and spirit. Our always "on" culture is not a natural state of being for any living thing. We all need moments of recuperation and rest where our system is able to regenerate and get the energy levels back up. When we move from screen to screen throughout our day (computer, television, phone), we don't allow our bodies to sync up to the natural flow of life around us, and ultimately that misalignment can cause a lot of problems down the road.

So this weekend, make an effort to spend time away from all forms of artificial light and give your body a rest. Shut your computer, turn off notifications, and listen to the sound of frogs and the crickets at night. Look up at the sky, let your eyes adjust to the darkness, and see how many constellations you can spot. Make yourself some tea, write in a journal, and go to bed early. Future you will thank past you for it.

HERE ARE SOME IDEAS OF THINGS TO DO IN THE DARK

  • Go for a night walk around the neighborhood

  • Light candles and read, write, paint, knit, play music, or play board games

  • Put on a shadow puppet theater show

  • Tell ghost stories

  • [insert your own personal self-care / family-care ritual here]

🌙 Dark Sky Night 4: Capture the Stars with Your Camera

Dark Sky week is the perfect time to capture the constellations with your camera. As the moon wanes, leading up to the new moon (and solar eclipse) on the 8th, we'll have the opportunity to see the stars with minimal lunar illumination. This makes it easier to focus on fainter celestial objects and achieve more detailed images of the night sky.

HERE ARE 6 STEPS TO PHOTOGRAPHING THE NIGHT SKY FROM SPACE.COM:

  • A tripod is essential. You simply won't be able to hold the camera still enough by yourself for the long exposures required

  • Use the timer delay on your camera to ensure there is no camera movement when taking the shot

  • Set your camera to f/4 or lower. Lower F numbers mean wider apertures and greater light-gathering ability

  • Shoot at a high ISO. The higher the ISO, the brighter the image, but also the granier the image. Find the right balance

  • Use a slow shutter speed. Start with an exposure of 10 seconds, see how that looks, and adjust as needed

  • Use manual focus. Zoom in on a bright star and adjust the focus until the light source becomes as sharp as possible

Email us your favorite photos and we'll post them on the website!

🌙 Dark Sky Night 2: Everything is Connected

For billions of years, all life has relied on Earth’s predictable rhythm of day and night. It’s encoded in the DNA of all plants and animals. Plants and animals depend on Earth’s daily cycle of light and dark to govern life-sustaining behaviors such as reproduction, nourishment, sleep, and protection from predators.

From Darksky.org: “For billions of years, all life has relied on Earth’s predictable rhythm of day and night. It’s encoded in the DNA of all plants and animals. Plants and animals depend on Earth’s daily cycle of light and dark to govern life-sustaining behaviors such as reproduction, nourishment, sleep, and protection from predators.

Scientific evidence suggests that artificial light at night has negative and deadly effects on many creatures, including amphibians, birds, mammals, insects, and plants.”

The good news is, we can reverse this.

HERE ARE 3 LIGHTING TIPS TO HELP SUPPORT THE WILD:

  • Save money and energy using amber LED bulbs, which reduces wildlife disorientation

  • Design lighting solutions that minimize disturbance to wildlife habitats and migration corridors

  • Advocate for and support regulations and ordinances that govern commercial outdoor lighting practices. These regulations can help minimize the negative impacts of artificial lighting on wildlife while still meeting human needs for safety and security

🌙 Dark Sky Night 1: Set the Vibe, Dim the Lights

Did you know that artificial light can be harmful? Overly bright and unnecessary outdoor lighting creates glare and skyglow, destroying critical nocturnal wildlife habitats, harming human health, and diminishing our view of the stars.

Did you know that artificial light can be harmful? Overly bright and unnecessary outdoor lighting creates glare and skyglow, destroying critical nocturnal wildlife habitats, harming human health, and diminishing our view of the stars.

As lighting options become more inexpensive and brighter, we are illuminating the night more and more. Every eight years, light pollution around the world doubles! Today, 80% of the world's population lives beneath light-polluted skies. 8 out of 10 children will grow up never seeing the Milky Way.💫 While lighting at night is necessary in today's world, there are easy steps you can take to ensure your lights protect the night! Check out DarkSky’s Five Principles for Outdoor Lighting!

You can stay safe and protect the night sky. Here are 3 PRACTICAL TIPS:

  • Illuminate driveways, walkways, and stairs with fully shielded lights that are on the warm color spectrum

  • Set lights on a timer to turn off when not in use

Why Dark Sky Communities Like Monte Nido Are Important

Dark sky communities, also known as dark sky places, are designated areas where efforts are made to minimize artificial light pollution and protect the natural darkness of the night sky. Here are some reasons why dark sky communities like Monte Nido are important.

A pre-dawn photo of Monte Nido during Dark Sky Week 2023

Living in a place like Monte Nido can feel magical with wildlife sightings and nature sprouting all around us. We get to witness the land’s natural cycle first-hand. Being a steward of this environment is a gift that in the beginning can feel overwhelming, but with time becomes an experience so unique that we will never forget. One of the first surprises when moving to a place like Monte Nido is that it’s DARK at night… VERY dark. There’s a reason. Well actually several reasons - and most of them have to do with understanding how we’re all part of (and affect) this natural cycle that surrounds us.

Dark sky communities, also known as dark sky places, are designated areas where efforts are made to minimize artificial light pollution and protect the natural darkness of the night sky. Here are some reasons why dark sky communities like Monte Nido are important:

Preserves our natural environment and protects wildlife:

Dark sky communities aim to protect the natural darkness of the night sky, which has significant ecological, cultural, and health benefits. Many species of plants and animals rely on natural light cues for their biological rhythms, including migration, reproduction, and behavior. Artificial light at night can disrupt these natural rhythms, leading to ecological imbalances and negative impacts on wildlife.

Promotes human health:

Excessive exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt human circadian rhythms and negatively impact sleep quality, leading to various health issues such as sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, and increased risk of chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes, and cancer. Dark sky communities prioritize minimizing light pollution to promote better sleep and overall human health.

Reduces energy waste:

Outdoor lighting that is not properly designed or directed can result in wasteful energy consumption. Dark sky communities promote responsible lighting practices that minimize unnecessary and inefficient use of outdoor lighting, reducing energy waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable energy use.

Supports astronomy and scientific research:

Dark sky communities provide ideal conditions for astronomy and scientific research, as they offer clear and unobstructed views of the night sky. This is crucial for professional and amateur astronomers alike to observe and study celestial objects, conduct research, and advance our understanding of the universe.

Promotes quality of life:

Many people value the natural beauty of the night sky and the opportunity to connect with the cosmos. Dark sky communities provide residents and visitors with the chance to experience the wonders of the night sky, fostering a sense of wonder, inspiration, and appreciation for our natural world, and enhancing the overall quality of life.

Help keep Monte Nido a Dark Sky community.
A few ways you can help are:

* Make sure motion sensor lights aren't triggered by passing cars or trespass beyond the intended area to be lit
* Make sure bright gate and driveway lights are on a timer so they're not on past the time that guests are arriving
* Turn off string lights when no one is outside to enjoy them
* Reduce the use of upward facing lights that illuminate the sky

Here are a few articles on why humans need a dark sky…

As a resident of Monte Nido, you have the unique opportunity to be a part of preserving the natural darkness and promoting a healthier lifestyle for yourself and your neighbors. Embrace the beauty of the night sky and join in on the effort to minimize light pollution, conserve energy, and support wildlife preservation. Together, we can make a positive impact on our well-being and the environment and create a healthy future for our community and our planet.

It’s Time to Make the Switch to Electric Lawn Tools—Here’s How to Do It Right

You’ve probably heard that California is making moves to be at the forefront of promoting zero-emission when it comes to lawn care. In fact, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill Number 1346, which phases out the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and other small off-road engines, and it went into effect January 1, 2024.

From Sunset.com by Kristin Guy

It’s time to step off the gas and practice mindful maintenance in the garden.

While this switch seems like a no-brainer to reduce air pollution, emissions, and noise pollution, there are definitely a few drawbacks that are causing hesitation for both consumers and the landscaping industry.

Price and additional waste filling our landfills are concerns, so should you still swap out your gas guzzlers for something a little more eco-minded? Absolutely. Read on for the pros, the cons, and recommendations as to which electric leaf blowers are the best options for your particular garden needs.

Benefits of Electric Leaf Blowers

Providing a cleaner and quieter alternative to gas-powered mowers, the main benefit of going electric is that you no longer produce air pollutants, burn any fuel or oil, or wake up your neighbors at 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday. Speaking of noise, traditional gas-powered mowers can produce noise levels of up to 90-112 decibels, which can cause hearing damage, not to mention negatively affect nearby wildlife. I think the most alarming fact I’ve read is how one hour of using a gas leaf blower is equal to driving 1,100 miles. If that isn’t a reason to step off the gas, I don’t know what is.

Malibu’s Canyon Roads Causing Concern Among Residents

With the recent focus on Pacific Coast Highway’s horrifically dangerous perils, some citizens remain highly concerned about the safety of canyon roads around Malibu.

Article from The Malibu Times by Samantha Bravo

With the recent focus on Pacific Coast Highway’s horrifically dangerous perils, some citizens remain highly concerned about the safety of canyon roads around Malibu.

Speeders throughout area canyons have caused many fatalities and injuries, leading neighborhood organizations such as the Monte Nido Valley Community Association to place signs directing people to report reckless drivers and providing a direct line to the California Highway Patrol.

The association is part of Operation Safe Canyons, a committee coordinated by the County Supervisor’s Office, CHP, the Sheriff’s Traffic Division and the Department of Public Works. As The Malibu Times reported on April 2, 2022, Corral Canyon, Stunt Road, Topanga, Tuna Canyon, and other neighborhoods are involved in OSC, as are bicycle enthusiasts. The group focuses on unincorporated LA County canyons that since the pandemic have experienced an increase in speeding and accidents.

Draft ADU Ordinance Amendments

Review the LA County draft ordinance by February 1st, 2024. Your feedback will help fine-tune the ADU Ordinance, ensuring it is both effective and implementable.

Repost From LA County Planning:

Dear Stakeholders,

We are excited to announce the availability of draft amendments to the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Ordinance for unincorporated LA County. An ADU, often known as a granny flat or second unit, is an independent living space located on the same property as a single-family home or apartment building. ADUs can be offered as rental housing or provide space for family members or caregivers. A Junior ADU (JADU) is a smaller version, with a maximum size of 500 square feet, located within a home.

Since the adoption of the County’s ADU Ordinance in 2019, State law has been amended to increasingly emphasize ADUs as a key strategy to address the housing crisis. These changes simplify the review process and expand the potential for both ADUs and JADUs. The proposed changes to the ADU Ordinance ensure that the County's ADU regulations comply with State law.

We highly value your input and encourage you to review the draft ordinance. Your feedback will help fine-tune the ADU Ordinance, ensuring it is both effective and implementable.

The draft is available for review at https://planning.lacounty.gov/long-range-planning/adu-ordinance-amendment/. Please direct your comments and suggestions to Ken Warner (kwarner@planning.lacounty.gov) by February 1st, 2024. Stay tuned for more updates. We anticipate scheduling the ordinance for a public hearing before the Regional Planning Commission in Spring 2024. The Commission will consider recommending the proposed changes to the Board of Supervisors, which will provide another opportunity for public comment on the ordinance.

Thank you for your engagement and contributions toward shaping our housing policies. Your insights are essential in our ongoing efforts to provide much-needed housing across unincorporated LA County.

Warm regards,
LA County Planning

Update from Darci on NextDoor:

The Monte Nido Art Walk is going to be great this year! Here is a teaser of only a few of the talented artists who you, dear neighbors, will get to experience for FREE, in your very own neighborhood! Please check out the website of the talented Cleo Maggiore, whose studio will be a short drive over to the street shared by the Hindu temple. Cleo is a fantastically talented and imaginative illustrator and leather craftsman who will be sharing her brand new studio with us! She will have for sale art prints, leather horse tack, wallets and bags!

Joshua Saltman, creator of the Saltman by Hand line of sophisticated hand-made solid-wood furniture and sculptural bowls, will be sharing his magnificent creations in his home studio. Please visit his website beforehand to learn how his skill has been developed and refined over four decades.

For years, Marty and Cathy Ikkanda have graced the neighborhood with their beautifully constructed collections of pottery and paintings. They are a seemingly never-ending source of creativity and skill, emphasizing, and likely inspired by, the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Monte Nido. They were recently the featured artists at the King Gillette Ranch Visitor Center! A poster featuring some of their work can be seen attached to this post. Calling more artists to join this wonderful event! Neighbors who are planning to visit the studios: why not invite some friends from out the area and make a day/night of it? Certainly, this is a day that calls for celebrating the place in which we live. (Rain will postpone one week. Beyond that, well, we haven't thought that far....)

Saying Hello to Neighbors Linked to Higher Well-Being, New Research Shows

Adults in the U.S. who regularly say hello to multiple people in their neighborhood have higher well-being than those who greet fewer or no neighbors.

Adults in the U.S. who regularly say hello to multiple people in their neighborhood have higher well-being than those who greet fewer or no neighbors. Americans’ well-being score increases steadily by the number of neighbors greeted, from 51.5 among those saying hello to zero neighbors to 64.1 for those greeting six neighbors. No meaningful increase in well-being is seen for additional neighbors greeted beyond six.

In addition to the correlation between greeting neighbors and personal well-being, this study finds a strong connection between Gallup’s Life Evaluation Index and neighborly relations.

The chance of being categorized as “thriving” in Gallup’s overall life ratings increases from just 38.1% among those who regularly say hello to zero people in their neighborhood to 60.5% among those who say hello to five.
