Wildfire Preparedness: Protecting Monte Nido and Malibu Canyon
Wildfire season is here in Monte Nido and Malibu Canyon. Stay ready with free home inspections, the updated wildfire preparedness page on montenido.org, and the LA County Fire Department’s Ready! Set! Go! Action Plan. Preparation today can make all the difference tomorrow.
Wildfire season is here, and for those of us living in Malibu Canyon and Monte Nido, preparation isn’t optional—it’s essential. With hot, dry conditions and strong winds, we must take proactive steps to safeguard our homes, families, and community.
Updated Wildfire Preparedness Page
We’re excited to announce that a newly updated Monte Nido Wildfire Preparedness page is now live. This page offers practical resources, checklists, and links to ensure you and your loved ones are ready when fire danger is high.
Wildfire Safety Live Discussion: Join the Conversation Sept. 30
Southern California Edison is inviting our community to join a live discussion on wildfire safety on September 30, 2025 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.. With the growing threat of wildfires in our region, SCE has been working to strengthen the electric system—upgrading more than 6,600 miles of power lines with covered conductor, integrating advanced technology, and planning to move hundreds of miles of lines underground in the coming years. These efforts, along with the continued use of Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) during extreme weather, are part of SCE’s commitment to keeping customers, communities, and team members safe. We encourage all neighbors to attend this important session to learn more and ask questions about how we can work together to reduce wildfire risk. Register here.
Free Home Wildfire Inspections
The City of Malibu’s Fire Safety Liaison program is currently offering free Home Wildfire Inspections. Inspectors will visit your home, point out vulnerabilities, and provide a personalized checklist of improvements to help protect your home from flying embers—the leading cause of structure loss in wildfires.
👉 Schedule your inspection today: City of Malibu Newsflash.
LA County Fire Department: Ready! Set! Go!
The Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) has issued an important reminder: in our region, wildfires are not a matter of if, but when.
“The safety of residents and communities remains our number one priority,” said County of Los Angeles Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone.
Chief Marrone urges all residents to harden their homes, create defensible space, and develop a personalized Ready! Set! Go! Wildfire Action Plan. This guide, available for download here: Ready! Set! Go! Action Plan, is one of the most effective steps you can take to keep your family safe and give your home the best chance to survive a wildfire.
Follow Evacuation Orders
The LACoFD emphasizes that evacuation orders must be taken seriously. Choosing to stay behind endangers not only yourself but also first responders who may be forced to divert resources for rescue operations.
Community Brigade Program
Launched in 2023 in seven Santa Monica Mountains communities, the Community Brigade Pilot Program has shown real promise in wildfire preparedness. Brigade members undergo over 100 hours of training in fire behavior, communications, and operations to assist fire officials. They also conduct home ignition zone assessments, helping homeowners identify risks before it’s too late.
Get Involved, Stay Informed
Preparedness is a community effort. The LACoFD encourages residents to:
Download and review the Ready! Set! Go! Action Plan.
Stay connected to neighborhood preparedness groups.
Regularly check montenido.org for updates.
Together, We Can Be Ready
Wildfires will continue to be part of life in Los Angeles County, but with preparation, awareness, and community support, we can reduce risk and protect what matters most.

The Ribbon We Missed: A Love Letter to PCH, Santa Monica to Malibu
The recent Palisades Fire, with its devastating sweep through our canyons, followed by the inevitable mudslides, left the vital artery known as PCH choked and impassable. It was a stark reminder of just how essential this stretch of State Route 1 (SR 1) is to our daily lives, our commutes, and our very sense of community.
Oh, Pacific Coast Highway. How we’ve missed you! For about 5 months, the familiar ribbon of asphalt that winds along our cherished coastline, connecting Santa Monica to Malibu, was largely inaccessible. The recent Palisades Fire, with its devastating sweep through our canyons, followed by the inevitable mudslides, left this vital artery choked and impassable. It was a stark reminder of just how essential this stretch of State Route 1 (SR 1) is to our daily lives, our commutes, and our very sense of community.
SR 1, at a staggering 656 miles, it is the longest State Route road in California. But for residents, it isn't just a road; it's a lifeline that hugs almost the entirety of California's stunning coast. For those of us who call this corner of Los Angeles County home, it's that 21-mile stretch from Santa Monica, through the winding curves of Pacific Palisades, and into the heart of Malibu that truly holds our hearts.
A Legacy Forged in Dreams and Determination
It’s easy to take PCH for granted now, but its very existence is a testament to vision and grit. The dream of a coastal highway, connecting isolated communities and unveiling California’s breathtaking beauty, began to take shape in the 1910s and 20s. Construction truly kicked into gear in the 1930s, offering much-needed jobs during the Great Depression.
But building through Malibu? That was a different story entirely. For centuries, this land was home to the Chumash people, who knew it as "Humaliwo," meaning "the surf sounds loudly." Later, it became the vast 17,000-acre Rindge Ranch, fiercely guarded by May Rindge after her husband’s death. May Rindge was a formidable opponent, battling tirelessly in court, even attempting to have Malibu declared a forest preserve, all to prevent public access. She fought the construction of the Roosevelt Highway (as PCH was initially known) tooth and nail for decades.
Yet, despite her impassioned efforts, the State ultimately prevailed. In 1929, construction of the Roosevelt Highway through Malibu began, marking the end of the Rindge family's exclusive control and opening this secluded enclave to the wider world. It was a turning point, transforming Malibu from a private domain into the more accessible, iconic coastal community we know today. The completion of PCH spurred development, leading to the creation of the Malibu Colony and its gradual evolution into a beloved destination for residents and visitors alike.
Our Shared Memories on the Open Road
Today, PCH remains both a crucial transportation route and a legendary scenic drive, offering unparalleled views of the Pacific coastline. It's more than just asphalt and white lines; it's a symbol of California's laid-back lifestyle, a pathway to sun-drenched beaches and endless ocean vistas.
And for those of us who’ve traversed it countless times, it's also a repository of cherished memories, punctuated by the familiar landmarks we will miss deeply . How many times have we smiled at the ever-changing, wonderfully witty sea-puns on the sign for The Reel Inn? Or anticipated the fragrant aromas wafting from Cholada Thai Beach House? The romantic glow of Moonshadows has graced countless evenings, and the easygoing vibe of Rosenthal Wine Bar & Patio has beckoned us to unwind. And who could forget the quirky charm of the Malibu Feed Bin, a little piece of rustic history nestled among the coastal glamour?
These weren’t just businesses; they were milestones along our personal journeys, woven into the fabric of our lives on this beautiful stretch of coast. With PCH gradually reopening, we'll once again embrace its curves and celebrate its enduring presence, a testament to resilience, history, and the simple joy of a drive along the Pacific.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Amazing Monte Nido Parade and Picnic Volunteers
What a day! The Monte Nido Parade and Picnic was an absolute blast, and it truly wouldn't have been possible without the incredible dedication and hard work of our wonderful volunteers. From setting up the festivities to ensuring every last piece of water balloon was picked up, your efforts made this year's event a resounding success. We are so incredibly grateful for your time, energy, and unwavering community spirit!
Our 60-year plus tradition (no kidding!) cannot happen without the elbow grease and heart-felt contributions, big and small, provided by YOU. As parade and picnic co-chairpersons we want to give a huge shout-out to everyone who lent a hand.
The festivities kicked off with your creative juices as we all went “Be Crazy.” Yehuda Netanel, as he has done for so many years, rounded up the floats, trucks, bikes, scooters and two-legged participants at the Edenwild bridge. Led by flag and banner bearers, Kayden & Ryder Franco, Theo Vassiliadis and Ace Adler, our local 67 fire crew started off the parade, followed by grand marshals Sally & Josh Livingston waving to the crowds atop Mark Mehner’s vintage fire truck with Bill Bischoff at the helm. As the parade wound its way towards Fleeman’s Meadow, traffic on Cold Canyon Road was paused by CPH officers, coordinated by Joan Slimocosky.
For the third straight year the picnic festivities were launched by Lauren Buckman and daughters Brooklyn & Charlie so beautifully singing the national anthem.
Who else but Tod Stobie would lead the day and call the games as master of ceremonies? A true master, indeed. Parade participants earned kudos and awards from judges Beth Bardovi, Mo Bardovi, David Still, Lois Love, Wayne Pepper, Gloria Serleto and Rose Duffy.
Have you ever wondered how the meadow is transformed to celebrate the day? It all starts with the generosity of property owners Dana & Grace Benson and the graciousness of our neighbors Cisco & Barbara Adler, the current residents. We are so grateful for the use of the meadow. Doug Rosen once again broke out his tractor to make sure there were no potholes to fall into, Ryan Cupps provided the Starlink connection that made ticket sales possible by the team of Ann Monahan, Mary Helen Young, Joan Slimocosky, Alison Sherman and Sean Foran. Setup was skillfully handled by the crew of Alison Sherman, Stephanie Cupps, Jennifer & David Still, Roger Savatteri, David Fryman and Sean Foran. All those tables and chairs? They were provided by Suze Randall, Jane & John Cudworth, Roger Savatteri, Mary-Helen Young, Jennifer & David Still and Joan Slimocosky.
If you visited the ice cream and drinks station that was Kayden & Ryder Franco who helped you. Watermelon? That was David Still with the knife. The ever-charming Ily Bakery was brought to you by Redfoo Gordy, Jasmine Ferreira and little Ily herself.
Tunes were provided by the delightful, right from our own backyard, Blue Dolphins with the PA System provided by Buck Sanders.
Behind the scenes Jennifer & David Still and Zadi Diaz kept us well informed on the website and Edy Crowder crafted charming home-made signs hung by Wayne & Julia Pepper.
The Raffle was a huge hit, and we raised vital funds thanks to the amazing generosity of our local businesses and talented individuals. Your donations provided some truly fantastic items and experiences for our attendees! You know who you are but for everyone else, here they are…Alice McDonald, Traci Katz, Kristen Woods, Bernadette Agcaoili, Michal Rouse, Jennifer Still, Shifra Wylder, Susan Bischoff, Shannon Sellers, Candace Johnston, Luci Norris, Shannon Sellers, Elizabeth Santonastaso, Samantha Carpenter, Bella Frymer, Heidi Stompe, Jane Cudworth, Lisa Mehner, Betsy Polatin, Marty Ikkanda, Tony Vassiliadis, Stephanie Cupps and Alison Sherman.
And, finally, the thankless job of cleanup was tackled by Joan Slimocosky and Kyle Mlodzik.
Thank you once again to every single person who contributed to making the Monte Nido Parade and Picnic a truly memorable day for our community. We couldn't have done it without you!

With gratitude for the truly remarkable community that we are,

Living Wild: Sharing Our Monte Nido Homes with Nature (and What to Do About Rattlesnakes!)
IIf you encounter a rattlesnake in your yard, the most important thing is to remain calm and give it space. Slowly back away to a safe distance and allow the snake to move off on its own.
Rattlesnakes generally prefer to avoid humans but will bite if they feel threatened or are provoked.
Monte Nido, it's more than just a place to live; it's a lifestyle. We chose these beautiful canyons and hillsides precisely because we crave that deep connection to nature. The rustle of leaves, the hoot of an owl, the deer grazing at dusk – these are the everyday wonders that make our community so special. But living so close to the wild also means sharing our space with all its inhabitants, and in our neck of the woods, that occasionally includes rattlesnakes.
While the vast majority of our wild neighbors are harmless and fascinating, rattlesnakes require a different kind of respect and awareness. They are an integral part of our local ecosystem, playing a vital role in controlling rodent populations. However, their venomous bite poses a serious risk to humans and pets.
So, how do we coexist safely and responsibly? It all starts with understanding and preparedness.
General Rattlesnake Awareness for Monte Nido Residents:
Be Vigilant Outdoors: When you're hiking our beautiful trails, working in your yard, or even just walking to your mailbox, be aware of your surroundings. Rattlesnakes often blend seamlessly with their environment.
Watch Your Step: Always look where you're placing your hands and feet, especially when reaching into dense brush, climbing over rocks, or stepping over logs.
Leash Your Pets: Keep dogs on a leash, especially during hikes. Their natural curiosity can lead them directly to a snake. Consider rattlesnake avoidance training for your dogs.
Educate Your Children: Teach children about the dangers of rattlesnakes and to never approach or provoke any snake.
Listen for the Rattle: While not all rattlesnakes rattle before striking, it's a clear warning sign. If you hear it, freeze, locate the snake, and slowly back away.
Give Them Space: If you encounter a rattlesnake, give it a wide berth. Most bites occur when people try to harass, capture, or kill a snake. A good rule of thumb is to stay at least twice the snake's body length away (stay roughly 10-12 feet away).
What to Do If There's a Rattlesnake in Your Backyard:
It's not uncommon to find a rattlesnake passing through your yard, especially during warmer months. They're often just looking for food, water, or a cool place to rest.
Assess the Situation: Is the snake coiled and defensive, or is it just moving through? Its behavior will dictate your next steps.
Keep Pets and Children Away: This is your absolute top priority. Bring all pets indoors immediately and ensure children are safely inside the house.
Do NOT Approach or Provoke: Never try to spray it with water, poke it with a stick, or try to move it yourself. This is how bites happen.
Observe from a Safe Distance: Often, if left alone, the snake will move on by itself. Give it plenty of time (even an hour or two) to exit your yard.
If It Doesn't Leave, Call a Professional: If the snake seems to have taken up residence, is in a high-traffic area, or you're concerned for your safety, do not hesitate to call a professional rattlesnake removal service. Look for local services specializing in humane wildlife removal. They have the expertise and equipment to safely relocate the snake. Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is open 24/7 and will come out to attempt a humane removal of a rattlesnake, however they do not promise the snake will not be killed as these are wild animals and their employee safety is first priority. Their emergency number is 818-991-0071 and their website can be accessed HERE. Socal Rattlesnake Removal specializes in humane removal of venomous snakes and will send a wrangler to assess your situation and remove and relocate a rattlesnake. This privately owned company has relocated thousands of snakes in the last decade and says the hardest part of snake removal is not capturing the animal. The hardest part is finding the animal a suitable habitat away from people. A rattlesnake’s survival actually depends on its territory. So it must be relocated far enough away to be removed from people but still within a range that offers it the best chance of survival. The phone number for Socal Rattlesnake Removal is 619-259-7121 and their website can be accessed HERE.
Yard Maintenance to Deter Snakes:
Clear Brush and Debris: Rattlesnakes love to hide in woodpiles, rock piles, dense shrubs, and tall grass. Keep your yard tidy and remove potential hiding spots.
Trim Low-Lying Shrubs: Create open space under bushes.
Seal Gaps: Check foundations, sheds, and any outbuildings for cracks or holes where snakes could enter.
Control Rodents: A primary food source for rattlesnakes is rodents. Implement measures to keep rodent populations down around your home.
What to Do If a Rattlesnake Gets Into Your Home:
This is a less common but more alarming scenario. Remain calm, as panicking can make the situation worse.
Isolate the Snake: If you can safely do so, close the door to the room the snake is in. If it's in an open area, try to guide it into a confined space (like a bathroom or laundry room) by gently pushing furniture or using a broom from a very safe distance (keeping yourself behind the snake). Do not corner it.
Keep Everyone and Pets Away: Get all family members and pets into a safe, separate part of the house, and ensure the door to the snake's location is securely closed.
Do NOT Attempt Removal Yourself: This is extremely dangerous. Your priority is to contain the snake, not to remove it.
Call for Professional Help IMMEDIATELY: Contact a professional rattlesnake removal service right away. Explain the situation clearly. They are equipped to handle this delicate and potentially dangerous situation. Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control is open 24/7 and can be reached at 818-991-0071 and their website can be accessed HERE. Socal Rattle Snake Removal, a private venomous snake removal company, can be reached at 619-259-7121 and their website can be accessed HERE.
Observe from a Safe Distance (If Possible): If you can safely keep an eye on the snake's location through a window or from a crack in the door, it can help the professional locate it quickly. However, do not put yourself at risk.
Identify Entry Points: Once the snake is safely removed, thoroughly inspect your home for potential entry points. Look for gaps under doors, torn screens, open pet doors (especially at night), and any cracks in the foundation or walls. Seal these up promptly to prevent future unwelcome visitors.
In Case of a Bite:
Despite all precautions, bites can happen. This is a medical emergency. Do NOT try to suck out the venom or apply a tourniquet as these actions can make the situation worse.
Stay Calm: Panic will only increase heart rate and circulate venom faster.
Immobilize the Limb: Keep the bitten area still and below the level of the heart.
Remove Constricting Items: Remove any rings, watches, or tight clothing near the bite area, as swelling will occur.
Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Call 911 or get to the nearest emergency room as quickly as possible. Tell them you've been bitten by a rattlesnake.
Living in Monte Nido is a privilege, offering us an unparalleled connection to nature. By understanding our wild neighbors, taking sensible precautions, and knowing exactly what to do in an encounter, we can continue to enjoy our beautiful environment safely and responsibly.
Stay wild, Monte Nido, and stay safe!

Monte Nido Was "Bee Crazy" This Fourth of July!
What a day it was in Monte Nido for our annual Fourth of July parade and picnic! The air buzzed with excitement (and maybe a few real bees, thanks to our "Bee Crazy" theme!) as the community came together for a truly unforgettable celebration.
What a day it was in Monte Nido for our annual Fourth of July parade and picnic! The air buzzed with excitement (and maybe a few real bees, thanks to our "Bee Crazy" theme!) as the community came together for a truly unforgettable celebration. The festivities kicked off with our much-anticipated parade, proudly led by the brave First Responders of Firehouse 67.
It was a heartwarming sight to see our beloved Grand Marshalls Sally and Josh Livingston waving from atop that classic, old-fashioned fire truck. The parade itself was a dazzling display of patriotic spirit, with an incredible array of floats. The creativity was truly astounding! A special shout-out (and a good chuckle) goes to the "Buzzed!" float, which snagged the award for Most Humorous Float. Those little Buzz Lightyears were an absolutely brilliant touch! The Desilva Family and friends took home first place overall for their entry, “Float Like a Butterfly Sting Like a Bee!” And in the walking category, we had to tip our hats to the clever and very Shakespearean entry, "To BEE or Not to BEE," which rightfully took home first place.
After the parade, Parade Chair-people Gary and Beth Bardovi warmly welcomed everyone to the picnic, and the good times just kept rolling. We were treated to a truly beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, sung by Mom, Lauren Buckman, and her twin daughters Brooklyn and Charlie. Their voices were simply angelic!
Of course, no picnic is complete without delicious food. The mouth-watering burgers from Tripp Burgers really hit the spot. Ily Bakery did not disappoint with their fabulous baked goods. Those sweet potato and molasses brownies were an absolute hit – seriously, if you didn't try one, you missed out! The atmosphere was made even more festive by the sounds of local legends, The Blue Dolphins, who have been gracing our area with their tunes for over 25 years. They delivered a fantastic mix of covers and even treated us to some of their own original songs, keeping everyone grooving.
Our energetic MC, Tod Stobie, kept the games lively. The balloon toss and egg toss were, as always, a smashing (and just slightly messy) success, bringing out the competitive spirit and lots of laughter. And finally, the moment everyone was waiting for: Picnic Chairpeople Candace Johnston and Tony Vassiliadis announced the lucky raffle winners! A huge congratulations to those who took home an amazing array of prizes, from thrilling surf lessons to delectable sweet treats and even some gorgeous silver jewelry.
It took a great hive to pull off such an un-BEE-lievable event. A more detailed thank you to all involved will follow.

Backbone Bliss: Welcoming Summer on Monte Nido's Premier Hiking Path
It's almost summer, and here in Monte Nido and Calabasas, that means longer days, warmer weather, and even more opportunities to enjoy the incredible natural beauty that surrounds us! As we welcome the season of sunshine and outdoor adventures, there's one local gem that truly shines: the Backbone Trail.
Recharge Your Spirit: Embrace Summer on the Backbone Trail in Monte Nido.
For those new to the area, or perhaps those who haven't yet had the chance to explore it, the Backbone Trail is an absolute treasure. This spectacular trail system winds through the Santa Monica Mountains, offering breathtaking vistas, diverse ecosystems, and a chance to truly connect with nature. And for us, living so close to its various access points, it’s like having a world-class outdoor playground right in our backyard.
A Glimpse into the Backbone Trail's Rich History
The Backbone Trail isn't just a path through the mountains; it's the culmination of decades of vision, dedication, and collaboration. The dream of a continuous trail spanning the Santa Monica Mountains began to take shape in the 1960s. For many years, various segments of the trail were owned by different entities – state parks, federal lands, and private landowners. This fragmented ownership made a continuous route a challenging, yet highly desired, goal.
The real momentum for the Backbone Trail as we know it today began in the 1970s and 80s, largely thanks to the efforts of environmental advocates, government agencies like the National Park Service (NPS), California State Parks, and the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA). These groups worked tirelessly, often over many years, to acquire land, secure easements, and connect the existing trail segments.
One of the most significant milestones came in the early 2000s with the acquisition of key parcels that finally allowed for the connection of the entire 67-mile stretch. This monumental effort involved complex negotiations and significant funding, demonstrating a widespread commitment to preserving public access to these stunning landscapes. In 2016, after more than 40 years of planning and land acquisition, the Backbone Trail was officially completed, creating a continuous route from Will Rogers State Historic Park in Pacific Palisades to Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County.
Your Summer Adventure Awaits!
Whether you're an avid hiker, a casual walker, or simply looking for a peaceful escape into nature, the Backbone Trail has something for everyone. From Monte Nido, we have several convenient access points that lead to different sections of the trail, each offering its own unique charm. You can choose a challenging uphill climb with panoramic views, a gentle stroll through shaded canyons, or an invigorating run surrounded by wildflowers in the spring.
As we head into summer, remember to stay hydrated, wear appropriate sun protection, and be mindful of wildlife. The Backbone Trail is a shared space, so let's all do our part to keep it clean and pristine for everyone to enjoy.
So, as the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, we invite you to step out and explore the magnificent Backbone Trail. It's a testament to perseverance, a symbol of our community's connection to nature, and the perfect way to welcome summer in our beautiful corner of Southern California!
Happy Trails!
